There is a history to be discovered around Slochteren and the Fraeylemaborg that reads like a Dan Brown mystery.
In 1692 a new Gothic church was built against the old church tower by order of Henric Piccardt lord of the Fraeylemaborg and his wife Anna Elisabeth Rengers. According to the Groninger state archivist Adolf Pathuis and the Harksteder Reverend B. Ronner, the church is a reflection of the Temple of Solomon.
